Resident Involvement Factsheet
Do you have an idea for something that would:
- Provide an extra service for your community
- Help someone in difficulty
- Provide activities and events for residents within your community
- Enhance or contribute to improving your environment
- Assist an existing Residents Association or Community Group
Friends of Muir Group will:
- Listen to your needs
- Take your ideas seriously
- Help you to research funding opportunities
- Help you to submit funding applications
- Help you to set up a Residents Association or Community Group
Resident Associations:
- Usually form as a constituted group
- May be exclusivley Muir Group residents whose aims are to represent the views of all Muir Group residents within a particular scheme or area.
- Or a group of residents from all sectors of the community whose aims are to represent their whole community.
- Membership is usually open to all residents in each defined area
- Formal recognition is given to groups that demonstrate they are democratic and are working in the interests of all residents.
- Residents from any scheme, estate or local community can form a Residents Association
Community Groups:
- Are Independent and formally constituted groups that operate for the benefit of everyone living within a local community
- They form to have a say about what is happening in their communities and to discuss local issues
- Membership can have a wider range, including; residents, local organisations, housing associations, local authority departments, local councillors, the police, or anyone who can assist with the objectives of the group
Social Groups:
- Do not need to be formally constituted
- They may be formed as part of a residents association or ran separately
- They usually operate to provide social activities for residents within a scheme or local area.
Resident Associations and Community Groups are an effective way to get involved in how local services are provided or for taking action to improve local environment.

community housing officer or
community engagement officer.
How can I become a board member
Friends of Muir Group board comprises of members from other Muir Group committees including independent members, as well as Muir Group residents.
We recognise that Friends of Muir Group can benefit from resident members who could contribute their experience or skills in a variety of ways. You may have professional expertise or a community fundraising background, or you may have the time and dedication to commit to its purpose.
