Community centre launches new Muir-funded digital suite

A COMMUNITY centre has launched an exciting new computer suite as part of an education project jointly funded by Muir.

People living in and around the Fearnhead Community and Youth Centre in Warrington are now able to benefit from a brand new IT suite, enabling them to access the internet at the touch of a button.

Muir Group Housing Association has worked in partnership with other housing associations in the area of its Cinnamon Brow scheme in Warrington, along with Cinnamon Brow Residents Association (CIMBRA), to deliver the Digital Inclusion Project.

The suite was officially launched on Monday, July 18th, with residents hailing the positive impact it can have.

Charlie Hulse, (pictured, right) who founded the Fearnhead Education Project three years ago and sits on CIMBRA said: “It has been a long road but we are finally here thanks to the help of Big Lottery funding and Muir’s assistance.

“The computer room will treble in size when the refurbishment is done and I hope everyone will enjoy using it.”

The facilities, which are already available for use, include 12 new laptop computers, a printer and photocopier and a Smart Board.

The scheme has benefited from a £1,000 Muir funding grant to supplement the £7,000 of funding gained through Big Lottery.

Lauren Wheeldon, Muir’s Tenancy Services Officer for Cinnamon Brow, (pictured with Charlie) said: “This project offers an array of opportunities for people of all ages in the community.

“Muir is really pleased to have been involved.”

Lauren has worked with the project’s steering committee to help the initiative become a reality.

Sharon Wimbleton, chair of CIMBRA and a Muir resident, pictured on the right of the group said: “I hope the project will be a success.

“People who are unemployed will be able to look for work and children can also get online to do homework.

“IT training is being provided as part of the project too.”

Also at the launch of the new computer suite was Warrington Borough Council chief executive, Steven Broomhead.

He said: “Refurbishment of the computer room has been agreed by the council for the Autumn.

“This project is a really good investment for the community and I would like to thank Muir Group Housing Association for its support.”
