Muir goes green with solar panel installation

Muir Group Housing Association has continued its commitment to reduce carbon emissions with the installation of Solar PV panels at its head office in Chester.

Works to install a 44KW Solar Photovoltaic system at the Association’s building at Lightfoot Street, Hoole, which are being carried out by Warmer Energy Services, are set to be completed by the end of the month.

The move towards solar energy will see Muir generate over 33000kwh of clean energy per year - reducing its carbon footprint by 18,510 kg in the process.

Muir has invested over £47,000 in the project, which it estimates will be paid back within 7 years.

The switch to solar power is part of Muir’s on going drive to lessen its environmental impact. Since 2010, the housing association has reduced its total carbon footprint by 33%, saving 327 tonnes of carbon emissions being released in to the atmosphere.  This is equivalent to driving nearly 1 million miles.

Catherine Dixson, Chief Executive of Muir said:

“Muir has always strived to be a greener, more sustainable organisation. And this project demonstrates our continued commitment to reduce carbon emissions and energy use.

“Installing Solar PV panels at our head office will bring significant long-term environmental benefits. For the first time, we will be generating our own, clean energy – which will lead to a significant reduction in our carbon footprint.

“This move also makes a lot of sense from a financial standpoint as well. Switching to solar means our energy bills will be a lot lower, and there is also further added benefit with the income that will be generated through the Government’s Feed in Tariff scheme. “
