Panel member praised for 'invaluable contribution' after stepping down

A MEMBER of a Muir scrutiny panel has been praised for his ‘invaluable contribution’ after standing down from the role.

Muir resident Ernest Maleham was involved in the panel since its inception in October 2011 and said he was proud to have been able to help improve performance at the housing association during that time.

He was presented with a membership for the Royal Horticultural Society by Muir as a token of appreciation for his efforts when he received a surprise visit from the association’s Assistant Director of Communities and Customer Services, Mark Pearson (pictured with Ernest), who was quick to recognise Ernest’s dedication to the role.

“Ernest has sat on the scrutiny panel from day one and his contribution has been invaluable,” Mark said

“He has been a really good leader and role model for his scrutiny panel colleagues.

“His challenges have always been honest and fair to Muir as a housing association.

“Ernest has always been very supportive and has helped to develop a very clear partnership with Muir and its scrutiny panel.

“We are very sorry to lose Ernest. We have learnt a lot from him during his time on the panel.”

Muir chief executive, Catherine Dixson echoed Mark’s comments and said: “Ernest has played a crucial role in the development of the scrutiny panel and its ongoing success.

“His contribution on the panel will be missed by us at Muir.”

Mark was joined by Ernest’s fellow scrutiny panel member, Ricky Cullen (pictured here with Mark and Ernest), when they visited him at his home at Muir’s McCartney House scheme in Godmanchester, Huntington.

Ernest, 81, admitted to being touched by the surprise and said: “The gift of the RHS membership and the visit from Mark and Ricky was most unexpected, but it shows that Muir does appreciate what you try to do.

“I had a very good five years and got a lot of cooperation both from Muir residents and management.

“I feel we did make a difference and had a positive effect on performance at Muir.

“I felt our independence was important and direct access to the board made our efforts worthwhile.

“I enjoyed being a part of making things happen and we were a useful resource.

“I will miss it on a number of levels – working with my panel colleagues and Muir liaison offers.”

Ernest (seen below with wife Jenny) also made special mention of the help the panel had received from panel consultant, Grainne Heselwood for her ready information and advice on legislation.
