Resident Quiz Night beamed across the globe

A community group in Fearnhead, Warrington, has hosted a quiz night with a difference – after it was beamed across the globe.

As well as the die-hard regulars, people from a far afield as Aldershot and Venezuela could take part on the Cinnamon Brow Residents’ Association (CIMBRA) & Blackbrook Community Association’s Quiz Night from the comfort of their own home – after it was streamed live over the internet.

The idea to stream the quiz came about following discussions with CIMBRA and Muir Group Housing, who were looking at ways to promote digital inclusion and get more of its residents online.

This was made possible with the help of digital inclusion champion John Popham, who was responsible for streaming the world’s first village cricket match live over the internet in 2011.

The quiz was live-streamed as part of Get Online Week 2014, which aims to inspire people across the UK to get online and do more with digital skills.

Muir Group’s Community Engagement Officer, Bev Price said:

“CIMBRA residents are keen to promote opportunities for people to get more involved through use of the internet. They came up with the brilliant idea of live streaming the Blackbrook Community Association’s quiz night, so that people could join in at home.

“Muir can help communities to learn how to live stream their community events and residents’ meetings and this is something we are working on.”

John Popham added:  “The fact that a quiz night in Blackbrook can be beamed across the world immediately is a novel way of showcasing what can be done with live streaming”
