Residents found the 'Five Ways to Wellbeing' for Older People's Day

RESIDENTS have been taking part in a host of activities in recognition of Older People’s Day.

People living at Muir’s Tweedsmuir supported living scheme in Chester have engaged in a range of events during a week of activities that tied in with ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ - evidence based actions which promote individuals wellbeing.

Older People's Day

UK Older People's Day is celebrated on October 1st to coincide with the UN International Day of Older Persons.

Tweedsmuir scheme manager, Donna Hufton said: “It was great to see residents enjoying a range of activities to celebrate Older People’s Day.

“Activities like these help to celebrate their position at the heart of the community and it is fantastic to see them getting involved.

“We had a really busy and fun time, where everyone joined in with something over the course of the week, and were supported and joined by friends relatives and neighbours.”

The Five Ways to Wellbeing include:

‘Take Notice' - Engaging in the world around you, which saw residents sample home cooked food at a local pub.

Older People's Day 'Stay active' - Residents got together to take a walk around their neighbourhood.

'Connect' – They enjoyed a social coffee morning in the lounge with families, friends and neighbours.

'Learn' – Tweedsmuir residents took part in a food quiz, learnt more about basic food hygiene facts and staged their own 'British Bake Off' as they tried out new recipes.

'Give' – Residents took part in the annual Macmillan Cancer Support ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’.

Maureen RileyMaureen Riley (pictured right), one of the residents who took part in the activities said: “I enjoy getting out and about when I can.

“It's important to keep moving as you get older and we are hoping to start some weekly exercise classes soon which will be good.”

Older People’s Day is used to mark a national and international celebration of the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society and to the economy.

Organisations and individuals actively work together to use this initiative to make a difference, challenge stereotypes and promote positive attitudes to ageing.

Events and activities take place throughout the year culminating in the main celebrations on October 1st.
