Muir Group helps youngsters make a positive mark
YOUNGSTERS in Blackpool, some of whom have committed minor crimes such as vandalism and graffiti, are channelling their creative energy into painting a graffiti wall.
Muir Group Housing Association is inviting 35 children from the Grange Park estate to work with professional graffiti artists to each paint a 4ft board, which will be attached to a hoarding surrounding one of Muir Group’s new build developments at Tarnbrook Drive.
The graffiti day aims to involve some youngsters, who are known to graffiti the estate, as well as others who have volunteered, in a positive community activity to paint the boards, and avoid the hoarding being subject to unwanted graffiti.
Barbara Stephenson of Muir Group explained: “We wanted to prevent any unwanted graffiti on the blank white hoarding so we thought we would invite some professional graffiti artists from Liverpool to work with local youngsters to create a graffiti wall.
“We have worked with the police to involve some local children who have committed minor offences for nuisance behaviour and other children have volunteered to come along.
“We hope giving the children this opportunity will help channel their energy into something positive, help their self esteem and deter them from spraying the hoardings.”
Other partners involved in the graffiti day include Blackpool Reassurance Plus, Lancashire constabulary, Grange Park residents association youth group and PAYP.
Youngsters will be rewarded with a healthy lunch to boost energy levels and as part of a scheme to promote healthy eating on the estate.
