Muir Group charity helps to fund ‘unity in the community’ event

CAMPAIGNERS from Worcester have been given £1,000 by Friends of Muir Group to stage an event that will help to unite a community

CAMPAIGNERS from Worcester have been given £1,000 by Friends of Muir Group to stage an event that will help to unite a community.

Worcester Pensioners Action Group said the money was a Godsend.

“It takes a lot of input from local people and organisations to get an event like this off the ground,” said group chairman Ron Chambers who came up with the idea of a special day for the people of Worcester.

“I am so grateful to Friends of Muir Group for providing us with this much-needed funding.  In helping us, they have shown that they are really committed to playing a positive role and supporting the local community.”

The event, which is for all in Worcester, will be held at the King George V playing fields, in Brickfields.

BBC Hereford and Worcester’s resident weather expert Paul Demari will be at the event, as will representatives from the local Afro-Caribbean, Polish and Chinese communities.

Local organisations including the Myriad Centre, St John Ambulance, and the Fire Service will also be represented and there will be a variety of table top stands selling items such as cakes and drinks.

In the spirit of unity, youngsters from all ethnic backgrounds are invited to take part in a five-a-side football tournament at the event, with a trophy being handed to the winning team.

“Worcester is made up of a diverse range of people and whatever their age, background, or ability, the aim of the day is to bring all these groups closer together instead of further apart,”

“I hope that more representatives from other community groups will also come on board with the event and help to make it a real success,” said Mr Chambers, 63, of St Georges Walk.

The £1,000 grant for the event has been made through Friends of Muir Group, a charity run by Muir Group Housing.

Mr Chambers, who is an active campaigner for local community issues, came to Chester, in Cheshire, to be presented with a cheque, from Muir Group Housing’s chief executive John Bellis, on Wednesday, October 14.

Unity in Community will take place, on Saturday, June 19, 2010.
