Unity day hopes to bring community closer together
WORCESTER residents from all walks of life are being urged to rally round and celebrate the city’s diversity.
Organisers of the first ever ‘Unity in the Community’ event – to be held on Saturday, June 19 - are encouraging people to come along, have a great time and find out what’s great about Worcester and the people who live there.
The free event will be held at the King George V playing fields, in Brickfields, from 10.30am to 4pm and promises to be a fun day for all the family.
Ron Chambers, chair of Worcester Pensioners Action Group – who have been instrumental in organising the event – believes the event will help bring the local community closer together.
The 64-year-old – who is also a key member of Muir Group Housing’s Southern Regional Residents’ Forum – explained: “Worcester is made up of a diverse range of people and whatever their age, background, or ability, the aim of the day is to bring everyone closer together instead of further apart.
“We are hoping that thousands will descend on the playing fields, take the opportunity to get to know their neighbours better and get into the spirit of things.”
As well as music, free activities, craft stalls and table top stands selling delicious cakes and drinks, there will be chance for people find out more about local organisations such as the cadets, and mix with members of the local Afro-Caribbean, Polish and Chinese communities.
In the spirit of unity, youngsters from all ethnic backgrounds will be taking part in a five-a-side football tournament at the event – with a trophy up for grabs for the winners.
Organised by the Worcestershire Pensioners Action Group, the event has been made possible thanks to funding and support from a number of key organisations including Muir Group Housing’s charity arm Friends of Muir Group, Grassroots Grants, Fun Busters, Worcestershire PCT and West Mercia Police.
Jan Kaneen, community engagement officer for Muir Group Housing, who has helped Ron organise the event, said: “At Muir we are not just about building homes, we are about building communities and the Unity in the Community day does just that. I hope that people will come out in their masses to support the event and help make it a real success.
“Ron is passionate about the area in which he lives and is committed to bringing about positive change, not just for himself, but for the benefit of his neighbours – every community needs someone like Ron.”
