BILL’S ‘BETTER AT MUIR’ HAVING LOVED LIFE MOTORING ACROSS EUROPE

COLIN ‘Bill’ Redford says his engine is at full throttle again after becoming a Muir resident following countless two-wheeled tours of Europe.

The 91-year-old motorcycle enthusiast has taken his passion throughout all of mainland Europe as well as the straights of Gibraltar and Norway’s North Cap.

Having served for nine years in the Royal Engineers, Mr Redford learnt to ride motorcycles while stationed in Gibraltar, where he worked as a miner in the tunnels during a stay of more than six years.

Colin Redford Now he is surrounded by memories of his days on the road thanks to the countless photographs and souvenirs he keeps in his new home at Muir’s McCartney House sheltered scheme; in Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire.

“When I first came to McCartney House I was quite ill,” Mr Redford said.

“But I’ve since got much better – the carers are good and the people are nice here.

“I’ve settled in and I’m gradually getting better.”

Colin Redford Granted the freedom of Gibraltar (right) as a result of the time he spent on the British Overseas Territory as a serviceman, Mr Redford went on to earn a living out of repairing motorcycles while also enjoying hundreds of trips throughout Europe as a member of the AJS and Matchless Motorcycle Club.

“All my trips started from just around the corner from where I am now because I lived in Godmanchester for many years,” the former Corporal said.

Mr Redford’s son, Robert, also spoke about how the move to McCartney House has benefited his father.

“I am pleased to say since Bill moved into McCartney House he has gone from strength to strength.

“I am happy to say he is now settled, accepted the changes, and his health is as good as it is every likely to be.

“The move to McCartney House has played a part in his recovery.

“We are so grateful for your help and support.”

McCartney House is a sheltered scheme for adults over 60 years of age, with independent living, but with support available should it become necessary.
