MP SHOWS HIS SUPPORT TO MUIR’S INDEPENDENT LIVING AND SUPPORTED HOUSING PROVISION

A MEMBER of Parliament says supported and sheltered housing opportunities like those Muir provides are ‘ideal’ for communities.
Justin Madders, MP for Ellesmere Port and Bromborough, officially opened the £280,000 fire safety upgrades and communal area refurbishment at the sheltered Smithy Court ‘Muir Living’ scheme in Little Sutton.
He was also speaking ahead of the annual ‘Starts at Home Day’ – which this year (August 29) focuses on the importance of supported housing to society.
“Sheltered and supported housing locations like Muir’s are an ideal combination,” Mr Madders said.
“They provide facilities and important safety nets that offer independence and additional support – sheltered accommodation for aging populations and supported housing for people with complex needs.
“Schemes like these will continue to be important for communities.”
Smithy Court’s over 60s residents gathered with Mr Madders to celebrate the opening of the new fire safety facilities and communal area facelift as he cut the ribbon on the improvements.
They are enjoying the scheme’s colourful new feel, while also benefiting from upgraded fire alarm systems, fire doors, smoke and heat detectors, and new vibrating pillow fire signals.
“It’s always nice to see investment into communal spaces,” Mr Madders said.
“I’m delighted to attend the opening.”
New chairs, tables, curtains, lamps, wooden flooring and carpeting have also given the communal lounge a whole new look and feel that helps meet residents’ needs.
Resident, Margaret May said: “We think the lounge is a lovely place to relax.
“It’s a great improvement, and a lot of thought has been put in.
"The painting and decoration have made such a difference, light, airy a lovely atmosphere.”
