Sheltered scheme's fantastic fundraisers donate to Meningitis Now

A FANTASTIC feat of fundraising by residents at one of Muir’s sheltered housing schemes has seen them donate more than £1,100 to charity.

Residents at the Smithy Court scheme in Little Sutton, Ellesmere Port, gifted a cheque for £1,164.39 to Meningitis Now after holding a series of fundraising events which included a four-mile charity walk around the town by Joyce Boaden, whose son had suffered from the potentially fatal illness.

FundraiserJoyce, a Smithy Court resident for more than eight years (pictured right with daughter Sharon), raised almost £500 from her efforts in aid of the charity.

Both she and the other residents involved were delighted with the amount raised during a six-month period which was gratefully received by the charity’s Community Fundraiser when she visited the scheme to meet them.

“My own son had Meningitis so it was good to put some effort in for it,” said Joyce, who undertook her walk with her daughter, Sharon.

“It great to raise money for such a very good cause and everybody has donated.

“We have held cake sales, bring and buy sales and more.

“Meningitis is a horrible thing,” she added.

Smithy Court residents hold regular fundraising events, donating to a chosen charity every six months.

Fundraiser Marjorie Chesters (left), who has been at Smithy Court for seven years said: “We do a lot of fundraising here.

“I do all kinds of knitting, for both children and grown-ups to make money for charities.

“It keeps me out of mischief and we raise a good amount for good causes.”

Meningitis Now’s Roya Armstrong was stunned by the final amount raised by residents.

She said: “For the residents to nominate Meningitis Now as their chosen charity and for it to snowball into an amount like this is absolutely fantastic.

“We can’t do it without this kind of help and I want to thank every single person who has made a donation.”

Fundraiser Enid Cook (right) is a resident who has been at Muir Group Housing Association’s Smithy Court scheme for 13 years.

She said: “I have done my bit for various charities over the years and I enjoy being a part of it all.

“It is a good team effort and it keeps us all busy.

“We have good fun doing these things and I do enjoy living here.”

Residents will now turn their attention to raising money for the Northern Lights Children’s Charity which takes children with life limiting illnesses on trips to Lapland each December.
