APPRENTICES PICK UP NEW TOOLS WITH MPS AS THEY LEARN THE SKILLS TO HELP MUIR RESIDENTS

TWO new MPS apprentices have been developing the tools to help Muir residents with repairs and maintenance for the Association.

Ted Pearson, 21, and 16-year-old Harvey Orr recently joined Muir Property Solutions on an 18-month apprenticeship which will see them become multi-skilled operatives – taking on tiling, joinery, bricklaying, flooring and more.

They’ve been out and about in Muir communities learning on the job as well as spending time in college to get to grips with everything they’ll need as they embark on the MPS careers.

MPS staffBut they downed tools for a short time to explain exactly how they’ve been helping residents while making the most of the apprenticeships MPS can offer.

“I’ve been getting involved in pretty much everything,” Ted (pictured right) said. “I’ve been shadowing the operatives as they do various repairs, working on new door casings, helping to sand walls, and I feel like I’m being really well looked after.

MPS staff“I’m really enjoying things and the apprenticeship is a great opportunity for me because I wanted a trade and I wanted to look long-term so I’m really committed.

“As well as developing new skills it’s also been good to meet residents too because that’s a different side to the job.”

MPS staffThe pair are putting together a portfolio demonstrating everything they do as they work to obtain NVQ Level 2 qualifications in multi-skill maintenance before choosing a specific trade and tackling their Level 3 qualifications too.

When they’re not out and about learning from MPS operatives as they respond to maintenance issues, Ted and Harvey are still hard at work at college learning construction skills and the theory behind what they do.

MPS staff Harvey (left), who left school after completing his exams earlier this year said: “Everything I’m doing is new and I’m trying to take it all on board.

“I felt an apprenticeship was the way to go for me and it’s going to help me a lot with my career path because it’s a good chance to decide my future.

“I’ll be building my skills up over time and I’m learning a wide variety of things.

MPS staff“Each day is different and so is every job so it’s a challenge and good to be getting qualifications as well.”

Ted and Harvey have also been receiving additional training including Fire Risk Awareness and Asbestos Awareness.

Nathan Kitson, MPS Electrical Supervisor said: “We’re enjoying having Ted and Harvey here and they’ve been progressing well.

“We have high hopes for them and it would be nice to see them become long-term employees with us at MPS.”
