Caring children take the lead by cleaning up in their community

TWO young children have taken a lead role in keeping their community clean after working to clear their street of litter.

Five year-old Ellie Stringer teamed up with her six-year-old cousin Reece Hitchen to collect litter on their street as they gave the Winsford road a spring clean.

The environmentally friendly pair have been recognised by Muir for their efforts as well as receiving certificates from their school and praise in their local community.

And they hope their efforts help send a message to others to play a part in keeping the streets litter free, and prevent any unnecessary harm to the animals living there.

“I am really proud of them,” their grandmother, Alison Burgess said.

“They just did it completely off their own bat.

“They went out with buckets and collected a lot of rubbish and the estate is looking a lot better now.”

Reece Hitchen and Ellie Stringer Ellie and Reece, pictured, who both attend Darnhall Primary School, decided to act after seeing litter dropped outside their Vauxhall Way homes.

They wanted to make sure the area looked tidy and help wildlife as they didn’t want any animals or birds to get hurt.

“It is great to see little ones setting such a good example,” said Alison.

“Neighbours have been saying how well Ellie and Reece have done, and they have also been recognised by their school.

“It is nice for them to receive that encouragement and hopefully it will help make people more aware of how important it is not to drop litter.”

Muir were also keen to thank Ellie and Reece for their hard work on the Vauxhall Way estate which has helped to keep the area looking nice for Muir residents, writing a letter to them as soon as their efforts came to light.

Robert Burrows. A Muir Tenancy Services Officer for Cheshire East and Warrington said: “We think what Ellie and Reece have done is brilliant for their community.

“Their work typifies many of the values that Muir itself seeks to achieve.

“They have been caring, responsive, passionate and dynamic in keeping their area free from litter and Muir is very proud of how much they value the street on which they live.”
