General Election sees Muir join bid to work with Government on housing provision

WITH the snap General Election just around the corner, Muir is backing the National Housing Federation’s bid to work with the next Government and provide more homes.

Muir Group Housing Association owns and manages more than 5,500 homes across the country and is building more each year to help meet the need for affordable housing in the UK.

House build Now the NHF is launching its ‘Working Together for Great Homes’ campaign to promote housing associations as the right partners for the Government to provide the homes the country needs.

The NHF is targeting three primary offers:

  • Building new homes
  • Helping people out of hospital, back home
  • A better deal for renting families

And Muir Chief Executive, Catherine Dixson (pictured), believes that working in partnership with the next Government can be key to providing the levels of affordable housing required. Catherine Dixson

“Muir appreciates there is a strong need for more affordable housing in the UK and that is why we continue to build homes as a housing association,” she said.

“The shared ownership and general let properties we create shows our commitment to doing this, but this is an issue that no one housing association can tackle alone.

“By working in partnership with the next Government, housing associations can play a vital role in delivering the large numbers of affordable homes necessary to meet the current need, as well as putting foundations in place for future generations.

“The NHF recognise the importance of partnership working in achieving these goals and the fact that the federation is campaigning to join hands with any future Government to make this happen shows the overall dedication of the housing sector in this area.”

Muir’s Executive Director of Operations, Sam Scott, recently spoke about how Muir’s shared home ownership opportunities were helping to provide an answer to families in the wake of shocking housing figures (see here).

Statistics released earlier this year by the housing charity Shelter, showed how eight of every ten families cannot afford to buy new homes built in their local areas.

NHF David Orr, Chief Executive at the NHF said: “Housing associations are united by a single purpose – to ensure everyone in the country has the opportunity to live in a quality home that they can afford.

“Housing must stay high on the agenda of the next Government. We are ready to work in partnership to end the housing crisis.

“At the heart of that is a commitment to those who find themselves in housing need.

“At the last election, we made the case that there is a housing crisis.

“Now at this election, it is time to talk about housing associations as the right partners for the Government to provide the homes the country needs.”
