Irene helps Muir residents enjoy the holiday scene at supported scheme
FUSILIER Court rarely sees a dull moment thanks in part to Irene Black.
A resident at the supported scheme for over 60s, Irene has long played an active role in helping others to enjoy life to the fullest.
For the past 15 years Irene has helped to organise holidays, day trips, parties and plenty more as part of Fusilier Court Social Group, before handing the reins over to the New Social Committee in 2016.
But she continues to organise a couple of holidays per year, going the extra mile to ensure everyone stays happy.
“I like to give back to the community,” Irene said.
“I need to feel my life is something, instead of just sitting on the sofa.”
Irene also organises coffee mornings for the local Cancer Shelter and has organised a ‘Nearly New’ fundraising sale which will take place in November.
She also attends St Stephens C of E Church and is a proactive member of The Deanery Commission in the Bury area.
Fusilier Court occupies the site of the former Wellington Barracks which once served at the home of the Lancashire Fusiliers.
During its 1688-1968 existence, the regiment became steeped in military history, with 19 of its infantrymen being awarded Britain’s highest military decoration, the Victoria Cross, which included ‘six before breakfast’ during the First World War’s Gallipoli campaign.
The distinguished military history of the regiment which also saw notable saw service in the Crimea, Boer, and and Second World War was recognised by Muir Group Housing Association in 2014 when scheme residents unveiled a memorial (pictured) to the Lancashire Fusiliers within its grounds.
The Muir scheme at Fusilier Court Fusilier provides accommodation for elderly residents, single or couples, 60 years or over (or 55 years and over if in receipt of disability living allowance), which aims to promote independent living, good health and provide support to vulnerable residents to encourage them to be socially included and provide them with a safe environment and home for life.
