IS SOMEONE TRYING TO TAKE OVER YOUR HARD-BUILT NEST? TAKE MUIR’S ADVICE
EVER been the victim of a Cuckoo?
The crime of ‘cuckooing’ is reportedly on the rise, and involves people going into the homes of vulnerable people before taking control of their lives and finances.
They often leave their victims in dire financial circumstances having gained their trust, threatened or manipulated them and abused their home before emptying bank accounts for their own means.
They sometimes use the victim’s home as a base from which to use or deal drugs as part of a wider operation.
Muir Tenancy Services Officer, Lauren Albiston, is warning people of the dangers after a Muir resident became a recent victim of the cuckooing crime.
She wants residents to contact Muir and access the Association’s free money advice and support service - rather than place their finances into the hands of someone pretending to be their friend or imposing themselves within someone’s home.
“It can be very frightening for someone who feels their life and finances are slowly being taken over by someone who has walked into their home and their world,” Lauren said.
“Sometimes vulnerable people don’t have the confidence or strength to question what is happening, are threatened or manipulated, and that’s why we must raise awareness of cuckooing.
“It’s also important to report this as a crime if you believe something like this may be happening to a neighbour or someone you know.
“Muir residents can call us on 0300 0123 1222 and speak to our own money advisors for free impartial money advice and support.
“Our Income and Tenancy Support Officers can also provide support and direct residents to trusted agencies, or even contact police on their behalf if they are too frightened to do so.”
