Kabul-born resident loves his life on Muir's Westerham Walk

SHAMSUDDIN Tahmas has been living with Muir on Westerham Walk for 20 years.
He moved to England in 1991, having left his Afghanistan homeland the previous year before spending 12 months in Pakistan to obtain treatment for his wife when she fell ill.
The 72-year-old loves living in the Reading area and was happy to share his experiences after settling on the estate in which he lives, and seeing his children flourish at the town’s university.
“It is a good, sociable estate,” said Mr Tahmas, who was born in Kabul.
“We have very good neighbours and they become your friends, which is important.
“Myself and my wife, we are both very happy here and we have always received help from Muir when we needed it.
“If we have ever had any issues, Muir have always resolved them quickly.”
Although he lives in a third-floor flat, Mr Tahmas has his own private garden near the entrance to the building, and says he enjoys being outside when the weather permits.
“It’s nice to have a small garden and I like to look after it,” he said.
“It is good to sit and enjoy it when it’s possible because it is a quiet area.”
Although his three children have long fled the nest, he says they were all able to benefit from the local university and added: “We all lived here at one time and it was a good place for them to continue growing up.
“It is very convenient to the shops and the town centre, and they all studied at the University of Reading so living here with Muir has really helped us all as a family.”
