MPS SUPERVISORS EXPLAIN HOW FIRE DOORS MAXIMISE RESIDENT SAFETY AFTER FACTORY VISIT

MPS SUPERVISORS have visited a fire door factory to see exactly how they’re made before being fitted for Muir residents.

In the last year, Muir Property Solutions (MPS) operatives helped fit 492 fire doors to help ensure Muir residents remain safe in the Association’s flats and independent living schemes.

Muir staff MPS Void Property and Repairs Contract Supervisors, Steve O’Hagan and Mike Picton, visited the Midland Building Products factory in Birmingham during national Fire Door Safety Week to understand how fire doors are constructed and tested to required fire safety standards.

“We saw the whole production process of how fire doors are treated, laminated, edged and grooved right through to completion,” Steve said.

“It was really interesting to see exactly what goes into making sure the fire doors we fit for Muir residents are safe.

“They showed us videos of the testing process which enabled us to see the difference between poorly constructed and fitted fire doors, and those which are done to required standards.”

Steve and Mike, who are currently completing certified Fire Door Inspection training, explained how rigorous independent off-site testing in one-sided controlled furnaces examines how long fire doors remain effective under extreme heat.

Fire Doors Fire Doors are built to last for either half an hour, or for one hour, depending on where they are needed in properties.

“Fire Risk Assessments completed by specialist Muir contractors show which doors are needed where on fire escape routes," Mike said.

Fire Doors “Fire doors similar to the ones we saw being made would be fitted accordingly to flats and communal areas to maximise resident safety and provide effective escape routes in the event of a fire.”
