MUIR SCHEME RESIDENTS RAISE THE ROOF TO SING AND SMILE THEIR WAY THROUGH LOCKDOWN
WE’VE not yet had Romeo and Juliet, but Muir residents have delivered some fantastic performances from their own respective balconies during lockdown.
Residents at Muir’s Independent Living schemes have been singing and dancing to some yesteryear greats – including an iconic rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ to lift their spirits and keep COVID-19 at bay.
The fun has been part of a host of activities keeping residents smiling with the help of Muir’s Independent Living Officers.
They’ve also been busy penning poetry and reading letters sent to them by local schoolchildren, as well as doing armchair exercises, painting ‘lockdown rainbows’, and growing vegetables and plants on their balconies – which may explain why some have seen theirs grow quicker than others if the singing has had any effect.
“Some of the ways residents have been responding to the situation has been really inspiring,” Lorna Clare, Muir’s Independent Living Officer at Smithy Court said.
“We all have a 12 o’clock wave each day which we announce on a tannoy.
“The residents all come to their windows and wave to each other, and we’ve had some singalongs too.
“They all sang ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ the other day which was really moving, and they’ve all made little wooden butterflies as part of the Craft Club which are now hanging from ribbons on the magnolia tree outside so they can enjoy them when they go for some exercise.
“We’ve also put lots of solar lights in the trees so they glow at night which look really beautiful and feel so uplifting to look at.”
Donna Hufton, an Independent Living Officer at Muir’s Tweedsmuir scheme in Chester said: “Residents have been making the most of things and it’s great to see some of the ways they’ve stayed in touch with each other.
“It’s been plenty of fun, and they’ve also started their own message wall for friends and volunteers to see when they drop off prescriptions and essential items.
“The volunteers we’ve had doing these things for residents have been absolutely fantastic, she added.
There have been similar scenes at Fusilier Court in Bury and McCartney House in Godmanchester too!
Residents have also been recording special messages for all of you at home.
