Muir's handy video hints can help keep your home mould free

MOULD can grow anywhere in your home where moisture is present so it is important to remove it before it spreads.
As well as looking unsightly, it can cause rooms and clothing to smell, so Muir has put together a series of handy hints, and a helpful video which can all be found below, to help you can deal with mould quickly and easily.
Places such as bathrooms and kitchens are more susceptible to mould because of the amount of moisture generated in them.
Taking a shower and boiling a kettle are examples of how condensation can form, giving mould a breeding ground on which to develop.
Drying clothes on radiators can also create more moisture, while pushing furniture tight up close to walls can trap warm moist air behind it instead of allowing air to flow.
Simple actions such as opening a window either during or after taking a shower can allow condensation to escape, reduces the likelihood of mould gathering, and stops any build up.

Muir Group Housing Association’s Maintenance Manager, Mike Proudfoot said: “Many of the reasons why mould grows can be prevented before it starts.
“We do get calls from residents concerned about the appearance of mould in their homes, only to find that it could have been prevented by taking a few simple everyday steps.
“Things like opening a window, even very slightly for several minutes on a cold day, can have a big impact on fighting mould.
“The important thing is that we can inform residents how best to deal with it in the very early stages, so that it doesn’t become a bigger problem further down the line.”
Muir’s top tips to help beat mould:
- Increase ventilation by opening windows and turning on extractor fans in the bathrooms and kitchens.
- Use an outdoor clothes line or tumble drier to dry your clothes instead of putting wet garments over radiators.
- Use a cloth or cleaning wipes to wipe away condensation from windows, sills and any tiles. Rubbing an affected area with diluted bleach (three parts water) can also reduce mould.
- Leaving lids on pans can stop steam escaping when cooking.
- Keep the heating on in your house for longer periods at low levels rather than heating it at higher levels in short bursts.
- When running a bath, put some cold water in before running the hot water to reduce the amount of steam.
