THIS YEAR’S RENT INCREASE MEANS MUIR CAN CONTINUE INVESTING MORE IN HOMES AND SERVICES

A MUIR rent increase will take place in April 2020 – meaning people renting their home from the Association will pay 2.7% more.

In line with Government legislation, Muir reduced net rents by 1% each April during recent years. *

Government legislation has changed, allowing us to increase your rent by the annual movement in the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) to the previous September (1.7%), plus 1%.

Therefore, your rent is rising by 2.7% from 6th April 2020.

The increase means we can continue investing more in our existing services and the homes you live in, including our supported and sheltered schemes.

The Association is also building more new homes too, helping to provide more affordable housing to people and families struggling against rising house prices.

Muir residents will receive a letter in February to explain what their new rent amount will be from 6th April 2020.

To make sure you’re paying the correct amount, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • If you pay by direct debit we'll amend it automatically, meaning you don't need to do anything.
  • If you pay by Standing Order, you will need to contact your bank to change the amount it is set up to pay.
  • If you receive housing benefit, we'll inform your Local Authority, meaning you don't need to do anything.
  • If you receive Universal Credit you must notify the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) of the changes to your rent.
  • Failure to act where necessary could mean falling into arrears on your rent account.

Your Income Services Officer can provide valuable support if you're having difficulty paying your rent.

Muir also offers free budgeting advice and can help secure the best deals for your utilities, meaning reduced energy bills.

* Service charges have never been subject to the decrease and vary each year depending on different factors such as CPI, your specific rent type or the type of service charges you pay – fixed or variable.

Please be assured service charges are only ever set in line with our policy and within the boundaries of the tenancy agreement you have signed.

The rent review letter you receive at the end of February will let you know how much your service charge will vary.
