Step Online - Volunteer to Become a Digital Champion
Did you know that there are a number of Muir residents that are not able to get online!
Could you give you fellow resident a helping hand?
Step Online is Muir’s approach to help residents access and use the internet safely, and with confidence
Our aim is simple - empower people to use the internet so that they can have access to the same benefits and services as everyone else.
By showing others to ‘Step Online’, you will help to improve people’s lives
They will:
- Be able to access government services online, claim for benefits and credits
- Be less lonely, isolation affects many people. Being online opens up channels of communication, interaction and independent living
- Save money by shopping for the best deals and bargains. The average user can save up to £730 per year!
- Be more aware of volunteer, training and job opportunities (80% of employers only advertise online)
- Increase confidence, knowledge and self esteem
What will I be doing?
If you have some spare time and are willing to support others to learn how to use the internet, you will receive some basic training and DRB checks so you can offer advice, support and information to others about how they can access the internet and some basic understanding of internet use, searches and safety.
- Promote the benefits of being on line
- Basics – showing how to use a mouse and keyboard
- Explaining the basics of internet safety
- Helping to set up an email account
- Showing how to access important information such as Gov.uk services and NHS Choices
- Showing how to make Google searches (for jobs, shopping comparison sites etc)
- Showing how to use Muir’s web site and how to access services
- Using social media
- Explain the benefits of 24/7 services such as banking
- Using Skype and other free applications to connect with family and friends
What is a DRB?
Called a Disclosure Barring Service, and replaced CRB’s (Criminal Record Bureau checks). All volunteers need to have one to help safeguard themselves as well as vulnerable people.
What’s in it for me?
Like any volunteering, the self-satisfaction and feel good factor is just so rewarding.
In three years time, the impact of not being able to get online will be devastating to people, by helping others now, you will be contributing towards people’s future health and well being.
- You will improve your own knowledge and confidence

Other frequently asked questions
Do I need any formal qualifications?
No, you just need to be passionate about helping others, enthusiastic about the positive effects of technology and getting online, be prepared to exercise patience and understanding, willing to learn new skills and attend training sessions.
Where will I be expected to go?
Muir have a wide and diverse area of communities throughout the UK. Mainly, your missions will be local and we would only expect you to travel if you are prepared to.
How much time will I have to commit?
Missions can be at any time to suit both you and the person you are providing support for. We will always introduce you first so you can agree a mutual appointment. You can give as much time as you want to, but we would expect at least 2 hours a week as one proper support session lasts around 2 hours.
Do I have to be a Muir resident to take part?
As long as you are willing to help Muir residents, you can still take part.
