ESCAPING domestic violence and domestic abuse can be hard, but support one resident received from us means she’s now living a better life.

A resident who found herself in a coercive and controlling relationship needed a way out and contacted us for help.

"This resident was fleeing a domestic violence relationship, and there was only a short window of time when the resident could plan, organise and execute the move without putting herself at risk,” Leigh Mucedola, Muir Tenancy Sustainment Officer said.

“She was in a controlling and coercive relationship and did not have any control of many aspects of her life, including managing finances. It was a huge move for her.”

How we helped...

Leigh provided reassurance during every contact with the resident, making sure each one mattered and arranging for her new home to be supported with extra security features including safety restrictors on doors and windows, and a video doorbell.

He arranged utility providers at the new address and showed her how to read gas and electric meters, as well as budgeting advice and support to claim a council tax reduction and Universal Credit.

He also helped her sign up to her new home, enabling her to make the move with the support of family once she had the keys to the property.

The resident is now much happier in her new home, living a fully independent and new way of life.

She said: “Leigh was incredibly helpful and supportive.

“He showed great understanding and respect for the difficult experiences I had faced.

“I felt completely overwhelmed by the thought of starting over, but Leigh patiently guided me through the practical steps I needed to take – such as separating a previously joint Universal Credit.

“He explained everything clearly which really helped to build my confidence – I'm incredibly grateful for all his help.”
